Water rescue

Roanoke-Wildwood and Longbridge volunteer fire departments enacted a water rescue on Sunday.

Local first responders had been dispatched to three emergency calls on Lake Gaston in less than a week following a boat fire Sunday near Camp Willow Run in Littleton.

At 4:20 p.m. Sunday, June 6, Roanoke-Wildwood again was called for a water rescue before requesting backup from Longbridge.

Upon arrival, the Roanoke-Wildwood rescue boat encountered a smoking boat, with no large flames, and three people - a woman and two children - in the water before rescuing them and eventually towing the boat back to the owner's property. No injuries were reported.

“Great teamwork,” Wilkins said. “I appreciate the assistance from Longbridge. We had a total of 15 responders from Roanoke-Wildwood. I just want to reemphasize that knowing where you are on the water helps first responders a great deal.”

Wilkins was referring to mile markers or other landmarks and exact locations to aid responders in quickly locating the site of the incident.
