The wait is over for Brunswick County's Joey Baird.
Baird's 121-pound, 9-ounce blue catfish caught in Lake Gaston was confirmed as the new North Carolina record, unseating Landon Evans' 117-pounder caught in 2016.
Baird made the catch on July 5 but the record was just confirmed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission on Monday.
The fish measured 60.5 inches in length and 40.5 inches in girth and was weighed on certified scales at Stonehouse Timber in Littleton.
Per N.C. Wildlife, to qualify for a freshwater fish state record, anglers "must have caught the fish by rod and reel or cane pole; have the fish weighed on a scale certified by the N.C. Department of Agriculture, witnessed by one observer; have the fish identified by a fisheries biologist from the Commission; and submit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fish."
